EDMONTON, AB – The Edmonton Oilers rookies will take on a MacEwan/NAIT All-Star Team comprised of players from the MacEwan Griffins and NAIT Ooks at Rogers Place on Tuesday, September 11 at 7:00 PM MT.
Past Oilers rookie teams have included ten current Oilers: Matthew Benning (2016), Drake Caggiula(2016), Jesse Puljujarvi (2016), Ethan Bear (2015), Connor McDavid (2015), Leon Draisaitl (2014), Darnell Nurse (2013), Jujhar Khaira (2012), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (2011) and Oscar Klefbom (2011).
This is the second year the Oilers rookies will face off against a MacEwan/NAIT squad.
The MacEwan Griffins and NAIT Ooks are used to competing on opposite sides of the ice as cross-town rivals. The Ooks have been a juggernaut in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) for the better part of the last decade. They have finished first in league standings for the past six seasons (2012-2018), amassing a combined 150-11-8-3 regular season record, outscoring their opponents 937-349. During these six years, they have captured three ACAC Championships and three ACAC silver medals, including one undefeated championship season (36-0-0) in 2015-2016.
Winning the ACAC’s last two men’s hockey championships, the Griffins have also become a powerhouse in the league. They defeated the Ooks in the conference final series in both 2017 and 2018. The Ooks (23-3-3-1) topped the ACAC 2017-18 regular season standings, finishing five points ahead of the Griffins (20-7-1-0). But MacEwan won the best-of-three final series 2-1, claiming a decisive 4-1 win in Game 3 at the NAIT Arena to raise another banner.
