Edmonton’s International Ice Carving Competition Returns This Month in a New Location at ICE District Plaza!

The Ice on Whyte Festival Society – soon to be renamed Activate Arts Alberta – is pleased to announce the return of Edmonton’s International Ice Carving Competition with a new name and an exciting new location. ICE District Plaza is hosting Chiseled in the heart of Edmonton’s vibrant downtown. The Society invited 8 2-person teams to create 15 block sculptures in 36 hours, from January 24 to 26, 2023. This year’s roster is comprised of some of the best ice-carving artists from across Canada and around the world.

You can watch these winter masterpieces come to life by visiting ICE District Plaza. The artists start by stacking the 300lb ice blocks and masterfully shape them into magnificent carvings using chainsaws and chisels. Each carving is made exclusively of water, ice, and snow, and judged on artistry and technique. A champion will be chosen on Thursday January 26 and these sculptures will remain for visitors to ICE District Plaza to enjoy.

Brightly lit & security patrolled, the ICE District Central Parkade has hundreds of heated spaces and convenient access to Rogers Place and located on the north side of 103 Ave just west of 103 St. The parkade offers 6’10” (2.08 m) clearance and quick indoor access to Rogers Place via the ICE District Central Parkade P1 elevator or through the Stantec Tower Level Two pedway.

For the enjoyment of all of our guests, ICE District is a smoke-free environment. All forms of smoking, including the use of cannabis products and electronic cigarettes (vaping), is not permitted on ICE District property. Please be aware that guests will not be permitted to exit and re-enter the venue during events.
