EDMONTON – Nov. 6, 2019 – ICE District is proud to announce that Rogers Place has earned the Gold Award for exemplary architecture from the IOC & IAKS. The International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS) is a global non-profit organization bringing together the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) to advocate for excellence in the visioning, design and operation of fully inclusive and universally accessible indoor and outdoor facilities.
Nineteen awards were presented yesterday at the Awards Gala Night in Cologne, Germany, to winners in six competition categories for buildings and complexes that integrate sensible sustainability considerations, strong functional planning and exceptional architectural design.
This year, 98 projects competed with entries received from every continent. Submissions for major international sports venues included countries such as Australia, USA, Qatar, Namibia and Malaysia. Rogers Place is one of only six award-winning projects from Canada, receiving gold under the category of “Multipurpose halls and major arenas.”
“Having been awarded this distinction is a true testament to Rogers Place and its world-class architecture, focusing on an exceptional fan experience and key design elements such as accessibility and sustainability,” said Tom Anselmi, Oilers Entertainment Group President. “On behalf of our partners at the City of Edmonton, we are so proud that Rogers Place continues to be internationally recognized, further enhancing the prominence of ICE District and serving as a model for other markets.”
“We’re proud of the vibrancy and excitement Rogers Place has brought to Edmonton,” said Linda Cochrane, Edmonton’s City Manager. “It has sparked new energy and helped attract investment. But most importantly it brings our residents and the greater Edmonton region together to revitalize our downtown community.”
This year’s theme of the IAKS Congress was “facilitating an active world” and projects were chosen for their inspiring future trends of urban planning and the design of active spaces and buildings. Aligned with this theme, the globally recognized Rogers Place is an iconic building emphasizing more than just an arena. As the epicenter of Edmonton, Rogers Place welcomes visitors worldwide to experience North America’s most advanced sports and entertainment venue.
The design for Rogers Place in ICE District was commissioned by the global design, architecture, engineering and planning firm HOK. Visually, Rogers Place features sleek and dramatic exterior architecture with a roof line that evokes the image of an oil drop and curvilinear stainless-steel siding that evokes the dynamic shapes of drifting snow.
Created to offer a premium guest experience for every customer, the five-concourse design of Rogers Place, including a full upper concourse, allows both the upper and lower bowls to be top loading which translates to nearby amenities for every ticket holder. Ford Hall is also superior in design and function, serving as the grand entrance to Rogers Place, providing a gathering space for fans and a natural connector between the arena and ICE District.
“We’re honored that the IAKS has recognized the design of Rogers Place,” said Scott Ralston, Principal, HOK. “The Oilers and the City of Edmonton should be commended for their vision and unwavering commitment to creating an icon for the city and an exceptional experience for every guest.”
A distinctly Edmonton address, Rogers Place is more than just an arena, proving to be a place to connect, enjoy new experiences and create new traditions.
